Leslie Nichols's work receives Best of Show!!

The Beauty of the Mind, is a 42 x 30" work-on-paper created with graphite and oil-based ink. The quotes used in the background are from advocates for girl's education in the 18th and 19th century. This is the first piece in Leslie Nichols's newest body of work exploring the early women's rights movement and the roots of American feminism.

Warren Greene, Assistant Professor and Gallery Director at Austin Peay State University, juried this years All Kentucky Juried Show, which runs through January 3, 2011.

New Affiliation with Ellis Walker Gallery

Ellis Walker Gallery shares space with MacKenzie’s and is located in Thoroughbred Square Shopping center behind Rafferty’s. The gallery features and promotes the work of local artists or artists who have original roots in South Central Kentucky and/or affiliated with WKU. Studio News: Spring Update

This spring has been a busy one! The garden in planted and school is out.

Mike has been tenured and promoted to Associate Professor at Western Kentucky University-Congrats!! Besides this news and exhibiting on both coasts this spring, he has been completely occupied with fresco. The 300 foot buon fresco he is creating on Western's campus has been framed out and prepped. With the help of students and apprentices the first two layers of plaster have been applied and are ready for the final layers of plaster and finally pigment. Leslie has been awarded a Professional Development Grant from the Kentucky Arts Council. This grant has helped her print promotional materials apply for exhibitions. In late June she will be heading to Hopscotch House for a studio residency where she will begin her new series of work. A TV production crew visited the studio yesterday interviewing Leslie and filming her while working on typewriter portrait. She will be featured on KET in a small segment produced by a very talented crew! We will keep you updated on when that segment airs.

"Michelle Affresco" traditional buon fresco

Mike's fresco Michelle Affresco was selected to be included in the 45th Annual Central South Art Exhibition at the Tennessee Art League Galleries in Nashville Tennessee. The show opens on May 1st and will close on June 25th. Juror Anne Bagby.

Juried Exhibition at Solano Community College

Leslie and Mike's works were selected for inclusion in the Open Juried Exhibition in the Dorothy Herger Gallery at Solano Community College, Fairfield, California. Leslie's work Changeable, and Mike's works Lakshmi and Subsist were juried in by Oakland artist Luz Marina Ruiz.

President's Purchase Award!

Leslie Nichols' work titled Identity was chosen for the President's Purchase Award (underwritten by Jeanne and Dr. J. Leslie Wyatt) in the 2010 Delta National Small Print Exhibition. Leslie's work is now part of the permanent collection of Arkansas State University, Jonesboro AR.

Her work was also prominently displayed on the exhibition catalog's front cover.

David W. Kiehl, curator of prints at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, wrote the following about Leslie's piece:

"Identity is a convenient catch-all for defining so much art over the last decade. Leslie Nichols successfully uses the word itself to create a portrait. The layering and size variations of the individual letters, coupled with modulated inking of the matrix, create the substance of her portrait. I like the use of stencils and graphite to title the work in the area to the left of the head."

Leslie's work “Identity” has been selected by David Kiehl, Curator of Prints at the Whitney Museum of American Art for the 2010 Delta National Small Prints Exhibition. This nationally competitive exhibition is hosted by the Bradbury Gallery at Arkansas State University.

The exhibition dates are January 21 through February 21 2010.

John Brown University acquires a Mike Nichols original drawing

People's Choice Award at Summer's End Art Show in Scottsville, Kentucky

“Figures in Flux” Exhibit to Open at JBU Art Gallery

Siloam Springs, Ark. (August 19, 2009) – John Brown University will welcome the works of nationally recognized artist Mike Nichols to the JBU Art Gallery. The first display of the academic year will open with a reception and gallery talk on Tuesday, Sept. 1 from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. The gallery talk with Nichols will begin at 6:45 p.m.

The exhibit will contain approximately 20 paintings that are primarily pastels, although other media will be presented as well.

“Drawing and painting allow me to investigate paradoxical issues of time and space, such as superposition,” said Nichols. “Some of my images depict objects seen from multiple vantage points. Others attempt to examine the pictorial possibility of multiple objects/bodies occupying a single space simultaneously. They are creative interpretations of things that are otherwise impracticable to me.”

“I discovered the work of Mike Nichols several years ago and found the images captivating and the quality exceptional,” said Charles Peer, coordinator of the gallery. “The colors are rich and the representation of multiple views ("Figures in Flux") are simple, bold and elegant.”

The JBU Art Gallery is located in JBU’s art building on the main campus in Siloam Springs. Normal gallery hours are Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and Sunday afternoon from 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. All gallery exhibits are free and open to the public.

Mike Nichols recieves an Al Smith Individual Artist Fellowship

Mike Nichols has been awarded an Al Smith Fellowship in recognition of artistic excellence for professional artists in Kentucky through the Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, which is supported by state tax dollars and federal funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Al Smith Fellowships are $7,500 awards given to Kentucky artists who have achieved a high level of excellence and creativity in their work. The purpose of the Al Smith Individual Artist Fellowship Program is to support Kentucky artists engaged in creating artwork of high quality and to recognize creative excellence in practicing, professional Kentucky artists.

Typography is the primary visual element in both Tulllis and Reuther's artworks. Matt Tullis assembles typographic artifacts with various found-objects to create compositions that recall the persona and mystique of old signage. Leslie Reuther uses letters and words to create spatial and literary passages in her new atmospheric landscapes. The artists' mutual love of typography gives this exhibition an interesting underlying concept, while the difference in scale and material create a visually compelling installation.

Opus Stratum, New Works by Michael and Leslie Nichols

The Stratum Series is a group of paintings inspired by our four month residence at Harlaxton College in Lincolnshire, United Kingdom. The word stratum refers to layered application of material to create atmospheric works. In Leslie's works, repeated application of paint and graphite alternating between tone and text are used to represent the layers atmosphere and landscape. Mike's works are layered applications of charcoal, fixative and pastel.

These new works are now on display in the Great Hall of Harlaxton College in Lincolnshire, England. On display in conjunction with the "Student Art Exhibit" from Spring 2009.

Painted in Stone; the Art of Italian Fresco Painting

Mike has been awarded a Faculty Grant from the Office of Sponsored Programs at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The grant titled, "Painted in Stone; the Art of Italian Fresco Painting", will give Mike the opportunity to view Italian fresco's in Tuscany, Rome and Pompeii. The grant will culminate in a large-scale buon fresco, which will be created in public by Mike and WKU students during the summer of 2010.

Teaching abroad!

Through WKU, Mike was awarded a teaching position at Harlaxton College in Grantham, England. This four month teaching appointment allowed Mike and Leslie to live in the breathtaking Harlaxton Manor (pictured above). The manor also provided a staging point for extensive European travel. A few destinations included London, Edinburgh, Paris, Amsterdam, Florence, and Rome!

UMKC Hospital Benefit Show

University of Kansas Hospital Cancer Show –
All proceeds benefit the new University of Kansas Cancer Center.

The show opens with a reception from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday October 3 at Leopold Gallery, 324 W. 63rd St. in Brookside, Kansas City. I wish I could be there in person to support this benefit exhibition. I made the piece pictured, "Hope," for this show.
The thirty works will stay on display through October.

Buon Fresco Technique

Mike received the Junior Faculty Grant, “Buon Fresco Technique” from the Office of Sponsored Programs at Western Kentucky University. This grant will fund his studies at the Fresco School in Los Angeles, California and his research of American frescos in the southwest and San Francisco.

After learning the technique Mike will create a series of portable frescos to be exhibited at the Western's University Art Gallery. He will be also be teaching a Fresco class at the University.

ART ON THE BLOCK

National Drawing Annual

Two of my drawings were selected for inclusion in the 2006 National Drawing Annual publication. Produced by Manifest Creative Research Gallery and Drawing Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, the NDA publication was conceived as an extension of Manifest's Drawing Center mission. Its goal is to support the recognition, documentation, and publication of excellent, current, and relevant works of drawing in the United States and beyond.

Manifest’s call for entries received over 350 entries from 121 artists in 27 states and six countries! The final artwork selection for the full-color publication includes 68 works by 33 artists in 16 states and four countries, including England, Scotland, Russia, and the U.S.

Due to be published in the summer of 2007.

"Players I" and "Players II" have been installed!! The H&R Block Center which includes Kansas City Repertory Theatre's new downtown Copaken Stage had its Grand Opening Saturday October 21. Great party with 2000 people seeing the art. This is a shot of young lady at the opening with "Players I" answering questions about art in the new collection. I will post images of both pieces when I get the final shots.

University of Missouri Kansas City film crew: Jeremiah Wedding, Cathy Woolsey, Daven Gee and Abozar Ardavani. These fine folks came to my studio for an interview and to take footage of my work. They are working on a short piece documenting artists commissioned for H&R Block's new world headquarters in downtown Kansas City. I will be excited to see their finished product. They are a very professional crew, thanks.
